[linux-dvb] Re: how-to for newbies

Ergh, distros packaging pre-release kernels again!
I must say... I tried using the DVB and DVB-kernel code with
Debian-supplied kernels and it was hopeless. I'd imagine the same
applies to Mandrake, RedHat, SuSE and co.
I gave in and got myself a nice fresh kernel from kernel.org. It just
worked!
I'm afraid that I have no experience with the bttv stuff myself, but
so far as
I'm aware, all you need is a stock kernel and the patches from
dvb-kernel
cvs.
A standard 2.4 kernel with the Video4Linux2 patches, *or* a standard
2.5 kernel (which includes V4L2 by default), is a good start. With
that working, just download, patch, and install bttv 0.9.4.
From here onwards, it's just a case of using dvb-kernel, like everyone
else does.
I did come across this thread when trying to find out what a nebula was
though:

Woo... that's me! :)
The nebula seems to be a terrestrial card, so you'll want to be using
tzap
rather than szap once you actually have some devices to work with.
I've never used the 'zap' applications. I just test with dvbtune and
dvbstream.
