Only just throwing an idea out here. Michael has a more specific
feel for the problems and solutions.

The system v streams type suggestion is something along these
lines. Streams are modules that you push between user level (dev
interface) and drivers. They seem to be mostly about line discipline
for serial devices, but the concept includes muxes.

The pictures in a old book I had 'Unix System V Streams Programmers
Guide' (1987!) reminded me very much of Michaels ascii art.

I've no idea if 2.6 includes any concepts like this. To some extent
the mix-n-match architecture of dvb resembles this anyway.
