I'm sure it worked on a previous revision of the driver with those cards.. 
I'll try regressing.

Nah, it was a bug in my code.

As it turns out, the changes I made don't help with my problems (I think 
they're interference problems). However, they do make the driver use the 
recommended Philips values, and don't have any adverse affects. Do you think 
its worth me finishing it off with a view to checking it in (after testing)?
