The box will reboot.  hotplug is needed even when manually loading the module 
for requesting the firmware that the dec needs.

Looking at your logs again, I'd say that it isn't managing to fetch the 
firmware, although I'm unsure where the error message is going..  Is your 
syslogger set up to do anything special with kernel messages of err level?

I imagine that you haven't done this:
rc-update add hotplug default
In order to have the hotplug daemon start up at boot time.  Can't remember if 
it starts the service on running rc-update.  Do this to be sure:
/etc/init.d/hotplug start
