jep this horrifies me, i tend to help people, they all can cope with a vdr,
most can use command line tools and follow short guides to get things done.
but i doubt that any one of them will be able to make a raid5 or raid-0,
and even those guys here on the list in favor of that idea haven't told how to do this as a new bee or how to expand a raid dynamic at all, since i don't know either (and yes i know raid quite well) i consider this loosing a feature that worked before and creating new problems (not in vdr, but else where).

OR

2) Create a number of genre directories under /video, manually mounting
fixed size partitions there.

This would mean a lot of manual operations it you notice after 3 months
that the 40 GB disk used for Sci-Fi movies only isn't big enough. The
main disk has 20 GB free space, which unfortunately can't be used for
Sci-Fi movies as it is a different partition. The Sci-Fi movies
directory would have to be moved to the main disk, and some other
recodrings would have to be moved onto the 40 GB disk.

oh this gets even worse if you (have to) use your disks for other
(big) temp stuff, like dvd authoring (~9GB+) or download of a new
linux distro (2-4 gb) or backup of the (money making) work pc (12 GB)
not to mention if some things like this come together, this comes to
heavy copying, which surly cant be done via the vdr osd, if recordings are to make and old stuff should not be deleted by vdr, because /video is full and the other disks are also not straight empty (whose hdd is empty to raise their hands first)...

This is partially guesswork, so please correct me if I misunderstood
something.

no, you are right, i hope klaus can be convinced not remove this feature,
and i can't see what is so difficult about the file handling for plugins,
they have the extra step of dereferencing, but the files on the other disks
do not need to be touched, i think its easier to explain and accept, that those disks 01, 02 , 03 ,... are not to be touched, but managed by vdr,
then making raids and buying extra disks..

but again i'm open for any suggestion on how to expand disks easily
and dropping this multi disk feature.

Regards Onno
