Please play only AC3 files and never WAV files with ac3play.

Two possibilties: maybe your soundchip has no S/P-DIF out and/or
the ALSA driver doesn't know about a S/P-DIF out and is not able
to open the interface.

IMHO you should try a newer ALSA driver version.
