[vdr] ffmpeg with dvb card ?

I'm now using vdr for a long time - and it's great.but i still don't 
understand some things.as i can watch to tv with grabdisplay option in xawtv 
i wonder if it is possible to use a program that is for v4l like bttvgrab or 
better ffmpeg and use it to encode from the /video device like it worked on 
my bttv?
i tried to record with xawtv but i'm not sure wether it fails because xawtv 
is buggy or something.So will i be able to encode to low resolutin opendivx 
with ffmpeg and DVB ?
