I believe even with DVB-C you should get a picture after loading
the driver, so as long as you don't get that, there may be no point
in running VDR.

Did you copy the file 'channels.conf.cable' to '/video/channels.conf'?

Maybe your local cable setup is different from what comes with VDR's
channels.conf.cable?
