It doesn't matter where you unpacked the sources.
What does "ldd /usr/bin/ac3dec" say ?
Please make sure that ac3dec really uses the right library.

I use the alsadriver since alsa-0.9.6 and they worked fine for me.

BTW.: Have you tried ac3play from http://www.alsaplayer.org/ ?
