There is the http://www.linuxbios.org project.
It aims to boot Linux directly out of a 2MB flash chip (MTD) - boot time for 
a vdr machine without X could be down to 3 seconds, with X about 15 sec.

Unfortunately only a few mainboards are supported and mostly you will need to 
replace the Bios-Flash chip with a greater one...
