This will result in the  '  character being replaced by a blank under
VFAT (since this mapping can't be reversed, because '_' is already used
to map the blank character). If this is acceptable, then this should be ok.

What about the ':' and '/' characters? Can you try filenames with these?

You can edit the timers.conf file and enter a file name with  '  there.

Don't forget to restart VDR after manually editing timers.conf.
