Well, the problem is, that VDR's output module interface or the OSD interface
must be very hardware independent. The OSD range is from curses (ASCII
output) up to a VGA card or even a 3D accelerated card (if someone wants to
use 3d animated GUI). A plugin writer has to support the most sophisticated
output, but has to ensure that even on curses it is usable.
Some things will perhaps never be possible with a DVB-card. Like for
picture-in-picture you need to mix two video streams. This is possible on a
VGA card, but for DVB you need to decode both streams, mix them and encode
them in MPEG again. Ok, in some years CPU's will be fast enough to do that,
but you have to wait then ..
