regarding lcd displays:

they're supported via lcdproc (www.lcdproc.com)
i think martin hammerschmids patch supports 24x4 displays.
see posting about new lcd plugin for vdr-1.1.3

prizing: you can get 4x40 displays from about 30 euro (single pieces)
to about 120 euro (standard). i bought some from www.pollin.de.
check lcdproc website for cabling and supported controllers.

i did a bit of work in this area too:
