Ok so we are both right, I just didn't catch the possibility to store it in
wrong AR to rescale it later. And since avi is used it is a short sight
solution, just my opinion ... your arguments are right too, just have to use
vdr for replay ;o)
For me it has to be scaled to correct AR anyway, so no decission on that
topic, only if you choose a lower bitrate you have to scaling down. At last
it is your turn, just my opinion.
A better container than avi would be for sure the best thing
OGM ?
mpeg4ip ? <- supports AR
But seems to be no decission for this version of your upcoming tool.

To be correct , mencoder can't produce Ogg-vorbis, nor it does it with OGM.
Ogg-Vorbis is audio-only in Ogg container. OGM is what you meant. Mplayer can
play it flawlessly, at least in the last version. I think there are things
like subtitle more then one audio-track and ogg-vorbis as audio track
possible. Moritz Bunkus did a great work on improving this. He is also the
one who wrote the ogm-tools. With that you can produce OGM , which is
supperior to avi and can be read on windows as well as on linux, and offers
the ability to use mode 2 ( like svcd) OGM-video-cds because of a better
error detection than avi. Does not know how easy this is possible on linux.

Don't know, maybe we could ask Moritz Bunkus about that.

Isn't possible. Just have to use ogm-tools. But mplayer supports it, for
replaying.
At least it seems to depend on personal opinion on how to convert. -cropdetect
should be used for quality issues,
