Do you have an ide dvd drive ?
There are some buggy ide chips (VIA for example)

FYI VDR 1.1.25, dvd 0.3.1, RH 8 with 2.4.20, DVB-T & Nova-T

Yes it is an IDE DVD drive and an old one (x2) at that. It's a Toshiba Equium, so the motherboard is proprietary (& a bit strange -
power goes in on the PCI riser card for instance).

I have noticed that DVD performance (stuttering) changes depending on which part of the disc is being accessed. When playing
a DVD the drive light flickers on briefly about once a second. If the flicker is quick there is no disturbance, but if the led stays on
longer then both the sound & vision stop until the light goes off again, so it would seem that IDE access is the culprit. I could dig
up a faster DVD drive to try (and may well this evening if I get a spare moment).

I was (and still am) hoping that a newer kernel with adifferent scheduling algorithm (i.e. a max latency version) might help this old PC - it
certainly compiles and runs fine, but (of course) I can't get DVB, or vdr to compile with it yet.

On the other hand I have loaded the new 1.0pre-whatever DVB driver and that seems OK (actually no different), which means that
the tuner in my DVB-T card comes and goes, while the Nova-T card is just fine.

One day I'll get there and can watch TV without the need to have makes going on at the same time !
