Michael,

If you are using X11 output from Mplayer and film is using an 
anamorphic 16/9 format (as shown in the picture you attached) you have 
to use -zoom to enable Mplayer software scaling (-fs to enable full 
screen).

As Sascha mentionned, Xv is a better (best ?) solution with XFree86 and 
software scaling with X11 is slow.
