Anything over 2GB would require major "surgery", which I don't want to do.
Besides, for backward compatibility VDR would still need to be able to
handle multi file recordings, so there's no real gain in there from VDR's
point of view.

Version 1.3 has other priorities...

What is so complicated about closing one file and opening the next?

If you delete the original files after creating your single file recording
you only the the extra space for one recording.
