I tried this and apparently the drive was flashed, since the FW
I initially read out of the drive and the one I read out after
flashing were different.

Unfortunately the drive still refuses to play my DVDs, with the
same error messages as before, saying

  This player is incompatible with the region marking of this disc.

What makes things even more odd is that the DVD "Starship Troopers"
still plays (although is is RC1, too), but X-MEN (which used to play
several months ago, presumably with an older version of all related
software) doesn't. Neither does "Star Trek: Nemesis".

Is it possible that I did something wrong when flashing the drive?

One interesting observation: at stdout I get

  libdvdnav: Suspected RCE Region Protection!!!

when trying to replay such a DVD. Could this be the problem?
