You can watch vdr files, avi-files, divx and anything else with mplayer.
IMHO it uses slightly less CPU than xine and is not so picky about the actual 
name of the file ;-)

Yes, there are, but i meant watching the files _outside_ vdr and use vdr only 
for recording.

If you want to watch it using vdr, you need the softdevice-plugin which uses 
xine for output.
