This is something I've been trying to do too, with mixed success. I
don't have the details in front of me, but mplayer/mencoder is partially
working for me for DVDs and (S)VCDs, especially with the -dumpstream
option.

See also the recent posts in this list: 'convert (S)VCD's to VDR files
using MEncoder' (11.2.04 06:33 and 20:00).

Conversion from other formats I have tried with the mpegtools, writing a
stream out as an MJPEG file, and then encoding it to MPEG2 with the
right bitrates, etc. But this is quite slow in software, and although
the results look fine on my desktop machine (mplayer), they have not
played well on mv DVB card.

Search on google a bit - there are a few web-sites out there
(dvbviewer.com, I think?) with forums where a bit more information can
be found. I've had "ProjectX" recommended to me, a java application to
manipulate MPEG streams, but so far I haven't had much luck with this.

I would suggest adding a "Format Conversions" section to the FAQ at
linuxdvb.tv - what do people think? With recipes for converting from
different AVI formats, DVD, (S)VCD, etc. to VDR? And in the other
direction?

Cheers,

Matt
