[vdr] to all vdr gurus: why is the watchdog so important ?

1- With vdr 1.2.6 when I run 'vdr', I got a segmentation fault but running 
'vdr -w 60' works ok. Why ?

PS: Is there any utility that can be used to construct a channel.conf file 
with the vdr format. I tried the scan soft with - o 'vdr' option, but vdr 
refuses to read the file.
