ok, quite sometime since i used freevo but why don't you use mplayer
inorder use your dvb card?
i mean you just want to watch tv and you don't intend to use the tv out 
feature of the ff cards, right?

i havn't tryed it yet but the "mplayer dvb://[card_number@]channel 
[options]" line from the man page tells me that it should work.
plus modifying your current mplayer plugin to include dvb support shouldn't 
be that hard. imho this will be easier then to bypass and work around 90% of 
vdr.
