[vdr] "Video Data Stream Broken" only happens with kernel.org Kernel on my system
Hallo,
I have been using a Suse 8.0 for a long time with the standard
2.4.18-4GB and wanted a newer kernel.
Some time ago I got the 2.4.25 from kernel.org and prepared it with
cp /boot/*2.4.18.config .config; make oldconfig
and compiled it. At that time I did not have the time to install and
test, so 2 weeks ago I decided to go on and installed it. Rebooted,
recompiled DVB + VDR and everything was OK, I thought ...
Then I started getting "Video Data Stream Broken" errors and tried to
find out what it was. It always happend when I was recoding something
early in the morning when the Server was fresh started (Server is
shutting down at night and started with nvram-wakeup).
I found the following in the syslog while starting the DVB driver :
Aug 21 20:07:56 vdr vdr[1663]: video device offset is 0
Aug 21 20:07:56 vdr vdr[1687]: EIT processing thread started (pid=1687)

Aug 21 20:07:56 vdr vdr[1691]: tuner thread started on device 2

I found others having the same messages in the linux-dvb but no
solution.
It must have something to do with IRQ ;) though ...
But as I did not get that with my Standard SuSE 2.4.18 kernel I then got
a mantel kernel 2.4.21-121 source from here :
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/2.4/RPM/
and compiled it on my system with the k_deflt settings. Installed it,
rebooted and compiled DVB+VDR and then the VDSB was gone! So it seems
that on my suse 8.0 it is very important to use an SUSE kernel !
Maybe there is something changed in the suse kernel what solves that
problem.
Maybe this can help some of the others having trouble with VDSB.
Note : I have got 1 DVB-s 1.6 and 1 Nova-s in my system and I was using
the "standard" 08.11.2003 DVB Driver with a patched VDR 1.2.6. IIRC I
also tried a cvs DVB version from 01.08.2004 but that did no difference.
I did once try an 2.4.27 Kernel but it crashed on me while booting so I
did not follow it up and it is a produktion enviroment (my wife and kids
are using it ;) ) so I will stay with the mantel kernel for now.
Greetings
