Scrap that last bit: I was running it over ssh and I've now found that it was
starting but stalling at some point (after it had listed all the timers to
log) and then just sat there with the initial "channel display" OSD on the
screen, live TV fully watchable, but vdr was unresponsive (the "channel
display" OSD stays on for ever). I think this is because the graphtft plugin
doesn't like NPTL either: removing that and vdr starts OK but I get lots of
the "ERROR: invalid Count in cRingBufferLinear::Del" errors as above.
Just checking the log from when it starts properly (with NPTL disabled) to see
the next bit in the log after timer listing (where it was stalling before):

So it never gets to the "max. latency step"! It looks like something must
stall in the initialisation of the graphtft plugin and vdr is waiting for it
to finish.
