I'm in a half way stage with VDR and h264. I didn't want the multipro drivers, but wanted to get a few HD channels working with vdpau.
I have VDR working with BBC HD almost, and Sky HD +24 and a few others, however, BBC doesn't seem to display properly, as well as having problems with the audio selection. It looks like it has macrovision protection or something like that.. (Using vdr-sxfe and xine-libs with h264 support).
As I said, other channels seem to work. I would try ITV HD but there's never anything on...
Any tips?
(In xxmc it sort of works, but jumps as it doesn't seem to have the guts to play the source.)
VDR 1.6.0 with h264 patch.
BBC HD works with streamdev :3000/TS/channel info.. on vlc.

I was just going to ask on the xine-vdpau mailing list/irc since in my setup (i.e. my laptop) xine-vdpau works worse than xxmc: vdpau mostly works with the astra hd demo channel at 23.5E (though there's some minor color fluctuation) while it doesn't work at all with the bbc hd channel (heavy pixelation, stuttering and horizontal banding). In both cases using xxmc the image is good, though sometimes there's some stuttering since the machine probably doesn't have enough horsepower (an Intel Core 2 Duo T9400). Anyway, it doesn't seem that using vdpau I have any less cpu usage. I'm using it with vdr 1.7.0+h264 patches and the xine plugin.
Bye

There is a bug in the broadcast of BBCHD (on Astra 28.2E, this problem doesn't occur on 1W) as the audio descriptor is wrong for the AC3 stream. This doesn't seem to cause problems with any other receiver now apart from VDR. I have mailed the BBC twice, and they say they are going to fix it at their "next technology refresh" as they don't want to be uncompliant with the DVB standards but they haven't done this since my first mail in December so don't expect anything soon.
If you turn Dolby Digital off in the VDR DVB menu then it will play only the MPA track and the picture will then work fine in VDR. However, unfortunately this track also comes with audio description which can be pretty annoying if you're not visually impaired!
It would be nice to see BBC HD again with VDR - if someone could give some pointers on how we might be able to fix it (see my earlier mail to this list on the subject with more technical details) I would work on a patch for those who are interested. But right now, I don't know where to start (I'm a hacker not a coder).
Thanks,
Morfsta

I tried activating dolby digital (I usually have it set to no), and I don't have a problem with the video (as long as I use xxmc, vdpau, as I said previously, doesn't work). Of course I don't hear anything (I don't have 5.1 hardware), and if I select the normal audio track it skips from time to time, but the video itself is fine.

I tried the turning off dolby digital and I get the Narrative track ok, but I still get corruption on vdpau. It's like vertical banding, reminiscent of trying to copy a video with macrovision. My pc doesn't display it well enough on xxmc, (I have an 8400 which should be fast enough with a quad core phenom, but it doesn't want to do it..)
I am using a VGA output, maybe it will work if I used a DVI one? Maybe it is HDCP protection?

I my case the bands are horizontal

I doubt it. I think it's simply a case of vdpau not working properly, or some magic setting that has to be tweaked (I had really funky colors until I reset the hue, saturation and contrast by editing .xine/config, no way to correctly adjust them from insinde xine). FWIW I'm using the laptop display (which has 1680x1050 resolution, so there's a bit of scaling involved from 1440x1080).

Sounds like VDPAU (or xine's interface with VDPAU) doesn't support MBAFF properly then.
BBCHD is one of the few HD channels that uses MBAFF, most use PAFF.
Kind Regards,

Is there a chance to provide a TS sample for investigation?
Bye.

Or, as I said, there's some parameter unknown to me that I should tune: I have the same problem with the astra hd demo at 23.5E Or simply vdpau doesn't work with my graphic card:
Model: Quadro FX 770M IRQ: 16 Video BIOS: 62.94.3b.00.06 Card Type: PCI-E DMA Size: 40 bits DMA Mask: 0xffffffffff Bus Location: 01.00.0

Hi, I have a problem on my system when I try to cut recordings, I can records big files larger than 2 Go but when I try to edit them (using Key 2) , system create tons of small TS files (splitted in 100/150 Mo each) whatever was the video format (mpeg2 or H264). If I revert back max recording size file to 2 Go, editing is OK and files well created Does anyone encounter this problem ?
Thanks for your help.

Does this also happen with an unpatched VDR 1.7.5?
