Hi!
I planing a new VDR System for a friend.
He want to have the possibility to view HDTV if broadcasted, so I planed to use Technotrend Budget Cards (2 Card for multiple recordings) plus a DVI Graphiccard.
Which Graphiccard would be best? I am looking for one without a fan because of the noise problem ;-)
Can I use a Mobile Pentium CPU? Asus is offering an adapter to use Mobile CPUs with standard mainboards.
And how does Softdevice switch between Standard and HDTV? Can I use a 16:9 LCD Panel easily or is it much configuration trouble before everything works fine?
Thanks for any tips ;-)
Martin

Try the Matrox ones, well supported by softdevice / DirectFB.

You don't need much Mhz, and power consumption is an issue if you have the box on 24/7. So yes, go for it.

Subscribe to the softdevice ML on berlios.de. There is no "switch" between SDTV and HDTV : simply a matter of frame resolution or size. The same applies to 16:9, which has to do with scaling correctly from frame aspect to screen aspect. Stefan is currently working on this. You will have much less configuration trouble as time goes by, and currently it seems to me that everything is easy. But I'm biased.

I would use nvidia-5200 + X-server + xine. The 5200 is available without fan, at least one model is fanless and has DVI.

For HDTV? Are you really sure?
I heared, and read, that a 3GHz CPU is minimum for HDTV in software.
The newer AMD Sempron CPUs (Winchester models, Socket 754) have cool-n-quiet, which makes them easier to cool silent. I took that one for a vdr box and I was quite happy with the noise (or lack thereof). These CPUs are really nice, even under full load they do not come above 60W. And idle they should be around 10W I read (did not try).
Asus has at least one motherboard with smart fan, that throttles the fan depending on the CPU temperature, wich works well with that CPU (as long as you update the motherboard bios before beginning).

Oops, forgot the HDTV requirement while writing this sentence. You are right.
