BTW, one of the known reasons (mplayer doc confirmed by a glance at the 
sound driver) is that you may have a dodgy kernel driver for the sound 
board, that does not report exactly the delay in playing sound to 
userspace (doing that wrong has no impact on typical sound use like 
playing mp3s so the driver author may not do it or test it), allegedly 
alsa sound drivers are likely to be better at that.
