Well, it was simply missing HOTPLUG, which I set to y. I guess I still find 
2.5/2.6 menuconfig a bit awkward so I just grep'd .config on the offchance 
that there was a HOTPLUG. Everything else needed for the firmware (whatever 
that was) seems to have been there.
