I had a brief look at transcode, and they demux the input stream into multiple 
pure mpeg streams (video, audio, AC3, ...) and then recombine those streams 
into the target stream.
Now, this is certainly the right way to go, but it also means that the stream 
is changed a lot more than it is currently, introducing the risk of lossing 
A/V sync.
Question now is, do we really want that?
