[vdr] TV picture boxed on all sides (UK)

Hello list

VDR works great for me now, but there is one particular thing that looks odd. Whenever the BBC broadcasts some older shows they seem to encode it as widescreen, but with added black bars on the left and right to the mpeg2 stream. This makes the TV picture displayed on the screen look much smaller than it could be. Bad attempt at ASCII art:

____________________________
/ widescreen border \
|____________________________|
| / \ |
| B | | B |
| L | | L |
| A | 4:3 picture | A |
| C | | C |
| K | | K |
|___\____________________/___|
| widescreen border |
\____________________________/

Had anybody else experienced this and is there a work-around for this?
(my setup: one NOVA-T with vdr 1.2.2 + dxr3 0.2.1)

Harf
