What about xine? Xine has DVB and DXR3-support and Reinhard Nissl is
currently preparing a libxine-based plugin for VDR to watch on X.
There's even a GUI called oxine which acts like an OSD instead of
additional GUI window.

If we implement Xine as A/V-backend to VDR based on Reinhard Nissl's
plugin we can output to DXR3, DVB or GFX and even use the Xine plugins
like http, dvd, svcd, audio ...
