But that's only a matter of assigning other keys (or keycombinations 
like the left Windows key + the a key (maybe the original one)) to xine 
commands that currently occupy the key you want to use for controling VDR.

As I currently don't control VDR very often by typing keys into xine's 
window, I've setup all VDR commands in xine to be key combinations of 
the left Windows key + the key that I use to control VDR from console.

For a different use case it may make sense to do it the other way round 
as mentioned above.
