Yes, I use the Dxr3 purely as a S-Video output.

If your goal was to have a TiVo, isn't it appropriate to assume the box 
would be based in a living room with a television rather than in the 
'shack' surrounded by VGA monitors? :)

Excellent.. you should look through the mailing list archives for VDR
(on linuxtv.org) since there is currently work ongoing for a 'software
backend' for VDR. In this way you can lever the existing high quality
development, and add support for output to an X11 window/SDL/DirectFB
with the MPEG2 decode being done by (e.g.) libmpeg2 rather than in
expensive hardware.

There are two or three people aiming for this goal... so there should 
hopefully be an overlap of skills :)

I agree that it would be wonderful if 'Kvdr' was usable with the budget 
cards :)
