[vdr] picture in picture / array of programs

Is it possible to extract several video PES from the TS, combine the 
individual frames, and then re-encode them with ffmpeg, to give live 
picture in picture or program arrays?

The usual answer to this sort of question is "anything is possible but 
...". Has anyone tried it?  What sort of computing power is needed to 
decode, combine and recode, say 9 programs on the fly?

Just a thought.
