Ah.  I didn't realize they were a standard item.

When you get a new receiver for use with Dish, you have to call into
Dish and register its serial number with them, along with the
smartcard you're using with it, and then they do something that kicks
them both on.  You can switch smartcards at will if you call them in.
I'm not sure "hacking" the unit will be necessary, as I'm a legitimate
subscriber.  ;)

But then, maybe I'm underestimating this.  :)
