Popcorn as VDR frontend

I need some advise on routes to look into on the subject. First, thank you Klaus and all for a great PVR. I have tried a lot of others like Myth, MediaPortal, GBPVR etc, but the silent menusystems are hopelessly inferior to having all menus on OSD. Me and my family have used VDR for 2+ years now and we are all happy with it. I am not bleeding edge VDR with DVB-T in Sweden being SDTV and we have only one TV-set although I'm running client/server xineliboutpout with a dedicated frontend machine. I bought myself a PCH with the idea of using it instead of my PC VDR frontend. With some effort and googling I got xineliboutputs vdr-fbfe (with xinelib et.al) cross compiled and runnable on the PCH. However AFAIK, the directfb usage in xinelib is based on pixelmaps written to a dfb surface, all mpeg decode is done in software, this is suboptimal on the PCH along with sound being a problem. Running vdr-fbfe on PCH says 'DFBGetSurface() not supported' and exits. It seems people have looked into streamdev instead. I like my VDR OSD though on the TV-set, am I wrong in believing that is a nono with streamdev? Now PCH has an 'IAdvancedMediaProvider' extension to directfb seemingly allowing the mpeg-stream to be sent directly to the hardware, thereby including both video and audio, it is sadly not fully documented in the headers released by Syabas... The most promising option as I see it is to slash down vdr-fbfe to only display the 'osd_command' data on a PCH DFB layer without video capability and stream 'normally' to PCH using ideally the xineliboutputs servers ability to supply for example an http stream. The hope being that the 'vdr-fbfe' application can access directfb concurrently and have the OSD displayed ontop of the video layer. Before I dig deeper into this I would like to ask the community what has been tried and what routes do you see as most viable? I know of some other PCH frontend software for GBPVR Myth, ie vomp and mvcpmx(?) but they seem to return me to the world of silent menus, not a place I want to be. /Johan -- Johan Andersson, jna(a)jna.pp.se

Dear Thomas, 1. In your patchset the patch fb-radeon-intel.patch [1] does include changes to drivers/video/intelfb/intelfbhw.c although in the install instructions [2] it is stated that intel drivers do not need to be modified. The changelog in 0.11 includes these two items. - patch against intelfb (kernel 2.6.26) to allow for PAL/SCART video timings. You now can use a regular SCART CRT as display for linux console. - fixed a bug in intelfb initialization which sporadically setup video timing with weirdous values I guess the installation instructions need to be updated for release 0.11. If this is correct I would update the instructions. 2. Well I was going to ask this question on linux-fbdev-devel but did not do so until I get a reply to my other message. a) Why is MIN_CLOCK set to 25000 in intelfbhw.h [3]? What would be the downside of setting it to 10000? b) Where do I get information about the registers, like what DPLL_A and DPLL_VCO_ENABLE is? In the header file some values are assigned to them, but where is it documented what they mean? 1.7.x vs 1.6.x vs 1.4.x

Hi All, First off, I'd like to thank Klaus for his excellent work in VDR - it really is the best DVB software around, and I've been using it for years. I'm currently using 1.4.7, it works beautifully. I've tried upgrading to 1.6 but my Irdeto CAM keeps timing out and no amount of tweaking of the various timeout defines seems to improve matters: one channel switch works, the next doesn't, switch back it works, switch back to the same channel no go.. Has there been any substantial work to 1.7.x in regards to CAM handling that might prove a worthwhile upgrade for my case? Mike

Crash VDR-1.7.4

I am using vdr-1.7.4, driver se-liplianin, Two DVB-S cards (TT S2-3600 USB and a FF Technotrend ) For several hours everything went fine including several recordings. When the last recording ended, suddely video and audio showed almost only distortions. VDR itself still reacted properly to remote control input, but audio/video did'restore. The PCH also freezes for me when using streamdev directly. My current solution is to use VLC's VLM telnet interface to clean up the stream. I start VLC like this: vlc-wrapper --ttl 1 --color -I telnet --telnet-password xxxxxx --vlm-conf /video/vlm.conf & Where vlm.conf has all the channels from VDR and looks like this: new 52767 broadcast enabled* (New broadcast, channel number padded +20000 to avoid conflicts with other services)* setup 52767 input http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:3000/TS/32767 *(Input stream from VDR/Streamdev)* setup 52767 output #std{access=http,mux=ts,dst=:52767} *(Output stream from VLC : http://<ip-address>:52767)* I used awk to convert channels.conf to vlm.conf. my command is listed below. It will probably need some work :) awk '{sub(":@", ""); chann = $0 + 20000; print "new " chann " broadcast enabled"; print "setup " chann " input http://vdr.decord.com:3000/TS/"$0; print "setup " chann " output #std{access=http,mux=ts,dst=:"chann "}" }' channels.conf You can then telnet into VLC like this : telnet xxx.xxx.xx.xx 4212 start streaming: control 52767 play The stream will be available at: http://<ip-address>:52767 I have a page with links like this: <a href='http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:xxxx' vod>channel</a> stop streaming: control 52767 stop This is just a hack, until hopefully VDR/streamdev will be able stream to the PCH without causing it to freeze. VDR using the DVBAPI without frontend0 and demux0

Hi, do you guys know if there would be a way to make VDR use the apadater0 WITHOUT using its frontend0/demux0 I/O. The only part of the DVBAPI that would be used would be: - video0 - audio0 - osd0 The flow would come from streamdev-client and demuxed by vdr of course .... These questions come from the fact that I have VDR running on a host with video and audio decompression support via the DVBAPI but without any registered tuner. Thanks !

This NVIDIA-spawned video API has already worked its way into open-source projects like MPlayer / FFmpeg, MythTV, Xine, and XBMC. This morning we find out from Stefan Huskamp that a new Linux VDR (Video Disk Recorder) / EasyVDR release is coming soon and it too will feature support for the Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix through its use of the Xine library. The latest release of this German open-source software is version 1.6.0 and it came out last March. The current development release is version 1.7.4. Look for a new release soon with VDPAU support. If Intel ends up implementing VDPAU support times will certainly be great for video playback on Linux, Not only is VDPAU much better than XvMC, but it even allows HD video playback with a very cheap GPU and CPU.

xineliboutput improvements

Hello all, I don't know whether xineliboutout developers read this list, if not, could someone pass the following to them somehow? Here are few points for improvements in xineliboutput: - Buffers problem on startup - There is no way to rewind a media file to start from the beginning (I would suggest a color button to do it when list of files is shown) - I would like to be able redefine the remote control keys, for example, in file playback both right and FWD buttons increase speed of the playback and both left and REW decrease the speed of playback. I would like to reassign one of those pairs to rewind and skip, the same as green and yellow buttons do it today. Or at least set replay and skip buttons do the same. - Trying to show images larger than current screen resolution crash the vdr-sxfe. I would expect automatic resize of the image. - Media files with file names in right-to-left language (hebrew for example) are shown in reverse. Nautilus shows them correctly somehow, so I believe its possible to get codepage of the UTF name and show it in correct direction. That's all for now. Thanks.
