HDTV - 2B or not 2B

Hello list, I followed the recent messages about the future of VDR with great interest . I would like to share my recent experiences about HDTV. As I consider myself to be open for "new technologies" like HDTV is now, I recently bought an HDTV receiver. It doesn't matter who produced it, I think my hardware is an average HDTV setup for 2007: a DVB-S2, MPEG4, H264 compatible receiver with a 1368x768 LCD display. My first impressions are: yes, it looks better, than SDTV. Some say the difference is comparable with the B/W - color one, well, I don't think so. I don't see any reason to watch a news or a serial in HDTV. I think HDTV would be fine for a couple of premium channels/package, for ex. a movie and a sport channel, and the rest should remain in SD. Considering the huge technical investment (20Mbit/sec/channel, high speed dedicated MPEG4 decoders, which consumes a lot of energy, HDready displays, etc), I'm not sure it worths to watch a wheater report in HD. Compared to a well encoded 16:9 SDTV channel (for ex. ZDF), an HDTV picture does not take my breath away. And one more thing, as I tested this brand new receiver: things that for us, VDR users, are usual for several years, are selled as brand new innovative features for a 2007 model set-top-box, and a lot of common VDR features are unknown for these receivers. Shortly: VDR is the best satellite receiver in 2007 :) What I want to say with this long story: I'm not sure if we (meaning the users) should push Klaus to the HD, or just wait him to finalize current tasks, and when time comes (and when there will be suitable HW), I'm sure we will have HD-VDR. Remember: HDTV is not a new era, as manufacturers try to sell us. It just looks a LITTLE better. I have a couple of SkyStar cards on a VDR server, running xineliboutput on an NVidia card using a VGA cable to my HDTV. I am seeing lagging, tearing and noticeable interlacing. Is it worth buying a DXR3 on ebay? -- Latest news on http://www.streetcredo.org.uk/rob Rob Davis

Best Diskless capable distribution ?

Hi! I reworked my ancient vdr system and build a new hardware around my DVB-S card (after a long time of not-usage). I want to use my server using a diskless architecture to run vdr. Idea, which dritribution for vdr to choose ? I intend to have a Debian/Ubuntu system for the vdr system, the distri should be easy updateable, but up-to-date current. I do not want to do manual updates in the form (get source, build, test, install, get plugins, etc.) the building / testing / installing from pure source is nice, makes fun, but I do not have the time for doing that this way. So, which remote boot capaple distri do you use ? Which is best to choose ? problem compiling vdr-xine

[PATCH]: vdr-plugin-analogtv blue faces on saa7134 (and other non bt8x8 cards)

I've prepared a patch that solves blue faces on saa7134 based card. I've wrote it over vdr-plugin-analogtv-1.0.00 and is available on my home server: http://tux.dpeddi.com/lr319sta/vdr/analogtv-20071204.diff Included in this patch a minimal makefile for v4l2-ctl (I've renamed it to vdr-v4l2ctl to avoid conflict) This should be used to look what control ctrl are available for the card and what is the maximum value of each control. Then, with readed value you could fill out plugins.analogtv.conf with: -b 255 -s 127 -c 127 -h 0 Since saa7134 card hasn't hue control, by setting -h 0 the hue control is not displayed on plugin setup screen and the control is not initialized on channel change. Perhaps I could write a small post-install that use v4l2-ctl to initialize automatically plugins.analogtv.conf. My patch don't work over v4l(1.0), but I think v4l(1.0) support only few cards brockertree based. Regards, Eddi P.S.: Tobias, you are welcome, if you wan't to add to your e-tobi.net repository.

softdevice and pass through - don't work

Hello VDR readers, I try to use pass through with softdevice. When I use the following options I get always the same error after start a 5.1 file: # ac3play: sound open: no such file or directory. I start the vdr with: -P"softdevice -vo dummy: -ao alsa:ac3=iec958:AES0=0x02,AES1=0x82,AES2=0x00,AES3=0x2#" or with the options in the setup.conf: softdevice.AC3Mode = 1 softdevice.AlsaAC3Device = iec958:AES0=0x02,AES1=0x82,AES2=0x00,AES3=0x2 softdevice.AlsaDevice = default When I run a 5.1 file with ac3dec all works fine. Any people having experience with CAM's and Dutch Canal Digitaal ?

Hello list, I'm building a VDR machine with Gentoo and VDR 1.4.6. I'm going to use VDR with the smartcard of the Dutch Canal Digitaal. I already have a Common Interface slot, and now I need to buy a CAM. Accoording to http://www.vdr-wiki.de/wiki/index.php/Conditional_Access_Modul there are some CAM's which are working with VDR. On the http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_message/27016439#27016439 forum the Canal Digitaal MediaGuard CAM (http://webshop.canaldigitaal.nl/article.asp?articleId=15434) was described as "not very reliable", and I can't find it on the VDR wiki as well. The Matrix and Aston from the gathering.tweakers.net is found on the wiki, but is not supported by VDR. On the wiki are the following CAM's which support SECA and SECA 2 and are supported by VDR: AlphaCrypt Twin, Diabol Cam / Dragon Modul (Rev. 4.1) / T-Rex, Reality Cam, Super Joker, Zeta blau, Irdeto Access. My question to you all is: Has anyone one of the above CAM's working with a standard VDR ?

xineliboutput frontend sometimes hangs

Hi, When I switch from any channel to channel 1 ( ARD / Das Erste ). it happens sometimes that the vdr-??fe freezes. I have tried vdr-fbfe and vdr-sxfe, and xineliboutput 1.00rc2 and also the cvs version. The error was not always the same: with vdr-fbfe I have to kill and restart it, with vdr-sxfe the screen blanks on channel 1 and I can zap to other channels which were fine, but back to 1 gets a blank screen. After restarting vdr-sxfe everything's fine again. Any hints what's causing this problem ? -- Helmut Auer, helmut(a)helmutauer.de

Genpix patch

Trying to get a Genpix working with VDR. I thought my troubles started when Reinhard posted his new vdr-1.5.12-h264-syncearly-framespersec-audioindexer-fielddetection.diff cause I got compile errors, (should of known better). But after digging back thru all the old patches I could find I believe this has been wrong for awhile. What is/was wrong was that the ‘switch (frontendType)‘ function did not open and close the ‘{‘ ‘}’ properly (thankz Reinhard for pointing it out) after the patch. The original code is like this switch (frontendType) { case FE_QPSK: { // DVB-S The patched code looks like this switch (frontendType) { case FE_QPSK: // DVB-S case FE_DVB_S: // DVB-S case FE_DVB_S2: // DVB-S As you can see the last ‘{‘ is missing and a ‘}’ had tobe removed later down in the code to make things happy. That is why I wonder how the patch has been working in the past. I tried to add the ‘{‘ in after the S2 and leave the removed 1 in but it wouldn’t compile, (figured that be too easy). What I have done is put the original ‘case FE_QPSK: { // DVB-S’ routine back into dvbdevice.c and have added a new ‘case FE_DVB_S: { // DVB-S’ that mirrors ‘case FE_QPSK: { // DVB-S’ routine and made a new ‘case FE_DVB_S2: { // DVB-S’ routine under the switch. I am no coder by any means but can cut and paste with the best of them. It does seem to patch and compile fine but really unsure if what I did will be ok. Was wondering if someone with a little more knowledge than me could take a look @ the patch and see if it all looks ok. Thankz No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
