No, CACHEDIR and RESDIR should work in the same behaviour as CONFDIR or VIDEODIR.
This sounds a bit like you set all your directories by command line. Sorry, but why don't you just use Make.config like everyone else does.
I know several people who set their directories on the command line and ignore maintaining Make.config completely so it's not true everyone uses Make.config.
