Has anybody made opposite? I am looking for a method to get my vdr box suspended. (Either automatically or after couple of hours inactivity).

How about /etc/inittab? Or maybe you got /etc/conf.d/local (depends on your distro). Or write an initscript for vdr that is executed after the lird-initscript.
