I have tried Vdrnfofs to export VDR recordings to a virtual file system. Then added that to my miniDLNA server pool. This serves recordings to a DLNA client ok, but it does not update with new recordings for some reason I have not yet discovered. The bigger problem with this approach is that it's difficult to get a DLNA client that has convenient features like resume playback, skip forward/backward and even just plain old fast forward/rewind.
I am seriously considering going down the XBMC-pvr route. The Openelec-pvr experimental branch works OK as a VDR client, if a bit unstable at the moment. Openelec is a minimal Linux OS built around XBMC. My target hardware is a basic PC with a good nVidia graphics card and only 4Gbyte USB flash disk as a boot device. It's a lot bigger than a TV set-top-box but it's not expensive. My budget is about £150. To keep power costs down, it uses suspend-to-ram when not in use. Resume from suspend is super quick.
