You can always try softdevice, which is mostly a playback interface using ffmpeg. It't not a full client - server solution like xineliboutput is, but it does have a shmem client server setup which might work for you.
It doesn't support vdpau though, if that's what you need.
Isn't softdevice abandoned? Someone had told me that it's no longer developed. At any rate vdpau support is a requirement so anything that doesn't have it can automatically be ruled out. I do agree that it would be nice to have an ffmpeg-based vdr plugin but at present the only vdpau capable option I'm aware of depends on libxine.
