For what it is worth, DVBsubs (the vdr-subtitles plugin) does work.
Some months ago (before release 0.1.2 if I remember correctly), there was a bug in softdevice DirectFB output that displayed the OSD overlay at the wrong position, making vdr-subtitles output invisible.
