vdr-1.7.11 can do that :)
I guess I will have to wait for the output device plugins to update before I can start using vdr-1.7.11. Thanks for pointing to the change log :)
The new command line options --edit and --genindex can be used to edit a recording or generate its index without actually starting the entire VDR
