Hi,
how can I convert a video file to the .vdr file format? Can I use transcode or mencoder for that?
I know there are several tools to convert from .vdr to something else, but I want it the other way round and convert "something else" to .vdr to watch the video with vdr, later.
My vdr has a FF card and I know about the mplayer plugin, but my system is too slow to convert most video files to mpegpes while playing it. But I wouldn't mind preprocessing a video file to watch it with vdr, later.
Regards,
Hanno

Aktually VDR plays any MPEG file renamed to .vdr just fine. Just rename it (or make a link) to .vdr and put it in a directory following the VDR conventions for a recording (YYYY-MM-DD.HH.MM.50.99). However the index is missing and the trick modes (search, slow) are not working. To fix this use "genindex" to generate an index file.

This is what I needed to know. Thanks a lot!
Are there any limitations I have to keep in mind? Does it have to be a certain resolution and refresh rate? Will vdr (or the FF card) convert a 320x240 pixel 60 Hz MPEG file to PAL resolution and output or do I have to that in advance?

VDR does not convert anything, it just passes the MPEG to the driver. The driver accepts whatever it would also accept coming from a broadcast station, which is mostly wider than what's allowed to put on DVD or VCD.
For PAL/NTSC the driver will keep the video system. So an NTSC video stays NTSC and would result into black/white on a PAL TV.

Depends on output device. In case of DVB cards, it also depends on firmware version. Some versions will pad the format to the next allowed higher resolution.
Compatible resolutions are {720,704,640,512,480,352}x{576,480,288,240}, though not all combinations work. Frame rate should be 25fps for 576 and 288 lines, and 30fps for 480 and 240 lines. And your TV should be NTSC capable if you want to use these resolution, of course.
