Er, that's exactly the correct behaviour for an EPG scan. Check your logfiles and you might see VDR picking up new channels / transponders. :)
VDR has to change to all the different transponders in channels.conf in order to perform a full scan.

I have 2 cards inside, why does it not use the second card? Is it possible to configure to use the second one? And why does it stay black and not show any picture after finish.
ok, i will check the logfile.
thanks

Are these cards both for the same system (DVB-S/C/T)?

Well, then only the budget card should be used. Are you using any kind of patch that might mess with this?

I have same kind of black screens. I have only one FF dvb-c card, old fujitsu-siemens one. Sometimes I get image back by opening menu, sometimes I need to retune to channel, sometimes I need to retune to another transponder and most annoyingly sometimes I need to restart vdr to get image back.
I'm using dvd plugin, mp3 plugin and subtitle plugin (dvb, not teletext) and vdradmind.
So, I could try to help finding cure to this... Just tell me what to do? I'm not familiar with vdr's code.

I have one budget card (Airstar2 DVB-T) and I had exactly the same symptoms. The picture disappeared always after an EPG scan - and never came back. I had to restart VDR to get the picture again. When I set "EPGScanTimeout = 0", it does not happen any more. I do not know how this helps, but it does it for me.

No, i use a plain vdr-1.3.41, without any plugin. I talked to a friend about it and he think that it can be a problem of the drivers. i use the driver from the kernel 2.6.11 and the following firmware: /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/dvb-ttpci-01.fw-261d
i want to upgrade to the actual kernel with actual firmware ...-2622, i hope it will help...
do you think?
thanks

It's at least worth a try.

i still have the problem, with the new kernel and firmware. now i saw another strange thing. after some time the screen was black and the message for shutdown ("press button to cancel shutdown") was on the screen, but the computer did not shutdown. so it seems that the automatic shutdown after some time also does not work.
any idea?

It's possible it may be a problem of VDR, in my config I have a DVB-S FF, and DVB-T, I no longer have a dish, and using DVB-S only for the great quality of the TV output, so I receive signal only from DVB-T. During the EPG scan, vdr probe both card for EPG changes but doesn't give the lock back to the Primary DVB device it seems, so screen goes black and need you to push any button of the remote to get picture back.
As far as I can remember, I always had this problem with this setup, but don't remember having it when i had only the DVB-S.

Hi!
The same problem exists in setups which use an DXR3-card as output device, so that vdr always has to be in transfer-mode. Several members on the dxr3plugin-users mailing list seem to have this problem.
With my setup (using one full-featured and one budget DVB-s), I only get the black screen when a recording starts. Normally the budget card is the source for the transfer mode, but it is also used for the first recording. It seems, if the epg-scan has started before the recording started, the first (full-featured) card does the epg-scan. If the transfer mode has to be stopped on the second card, it doesn't get switched correctly to the first card (the logfiles suggest that the epg-scan continues). Maybe there is a problem in vdr that prevents the correct selection of receiving cards. One thing I noticed: The comments in cDevice::GetDevice() seem to indicate that vdr distinguishes full-featured and budget cards with an HasDecoder()-call, which returns true for dxr3-devices.
Best regards,
Thorsten
