Hi,
Has anyone been able to run VLC, used as a stream server, without streamdev?
I tried without success: vlc -vvv v4l:/dev/video0 [...etc...] but it fails with a "can't access /dev/video*". I'm still lost/learning the framework, so could someone be so kind to explain me the relation between vdr and /dev/video*.
I have a budget (skystar2) card, is that the reason why /dev/video* doesn't get available? do I need any additional kernel driver? Or, is it possible to have 'vdr' (or xine/softdevice plugins) push the selected channel towards /dev/video*, so it can be read by vlc?
Main reason I want this is to have OSD on the stream vs streamdev. If you know of another alternative to get streaming+OSD then I'm also interested.
Thanks a lot for your help

Correct. /dev/video provides full-frame video, completely uncompressed. Hence it only exists when using a full-featured card, because the card does the MPEG2 decode.

Nope, this is not currently possible.
Cheers, Gavin.

Ok, thank you Gavin.
Let me add some complexity and find out (before buying) more about it.
What if I add another board to my setup? I'm planning to buy a DVB-T (Hauppauge WinTV NOVA-t USB2) for terrestrial view. (http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/pages/products/data_novatusb2.html)
I guess vdr supports this: 1xDVB-S + 1xDVB-T, but how does it handle it?, two vdr instances? or one instance and special channels.conf?
Would I get VLC access to /dev/video*? when Terrestrial channel is selected?
Anyone has this type of setup and is willing to share experience?
Thanks again, luis

It's handled natively by a single VDR instance.. each channels.conf line refers to the technology used.. e.g in my DVB-C and DVB-T system:
BBC ONE;BC27:595000:C34M64:C:6952:600:32=eng,602=eng:605:0:1701:61472:401:0
BBC ONE;BBC:754166:C34D34M16B8T2G32Y0:T:27500:600:601=eng,602=eng:0:0:4168:9018:4104:0
for the same channel, the first on cable, and the second on terrestrial - notice the 'T' and 'C' field..
Would I get VLC access to /dev/video*? when Terrestrial channel is selected?
Yes, provided the VDR 'head unit' is tuned to that channel (the data passes in 'transfer mode' from the DVB-T to the full-feature DVB-S
Note that it is perfectly possible to make a recording on the DVB-T card and watch a different channel.. or stream a DVB-T channel via streamdev, and record/watch a DVB-S channel :)

If you use streamdev-client you have an OSD, but it's been a while since I last used streamdev because...

...the xine plugin with the network patches works very well[*]: I have a dxr3 in my vdr box to connect it to the tv set, but when I want to watch tv on my laptop I just use xine and the dxr3 stops working automatically. When xine client disconnects the dxr3 starts working again.
[*]although there are still problems with fast forward/rewind/jump 1 minute back/forward.
