Forthcoming VDR Release To Support VDPAU
Posted by Michael Larabel on March 09, 2009
NVIDIA's VDPAU feature for providing greater GPU acceleration during video playback on Linux desktops has experienced great adoption since its November launch. This NVIDIA-spawned video API has already worked its way into open-source projects like MPlayer / FFmpeg, MythTV, Xine, and XBMC. This morning we find out from Stefan Huskamp that a new Linux VDR (Video Disk Recorder) / EasyVDR release is coming soon and it too will feature support for the Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix through its use of the Xine library.
The latest release of this German open-source software is version 1.6.0 and it came out last March. The current development release is version 1.7.4. Look for a new release soon with VDPAU support. If Intel ends up implementing VDPAU support times will certainly be great for video playback on Linux, Not only is VDPAU much better than XvMC, but it even allows HD video playback with a very cheap GPU and CPU.
I've been using vdpau-enabled xine in VDR-1.7.4 (via xine-0.9.0) for some time now so if he's only saying it's possible then that's old news. But if he's saying vdpau will be supported in VDR core, then that's pretty big news in my opinion (although I don't believe that's the case).
Either way I'm glad to see VDR getting some promo! :)

Why should any special output device get support in VDR core, if I'm permanently being pestered to remove even support for DVB devices from the core code?

Is core VDR still being developed?

I'm currently working on making it ready for HDTV.

Hi Klaus,
i am using VDR since it's first days, but wasn't active in the list for several years.
I've experimented with HDTV and VDR 1.7.4. Looks quite promising. Will it have native support for the eHD card or will the Reel - plugin still be needed in future versions?

The same answer as above applies to this question ;-) Support for any type of output device shall be implemented by a plugin. I am even planning on moving the support for DVB devices into a plugin (not because I'd like to, but because people requested it).

Think thats some bad wording. It should rather have been (changed part between **): "This morning we find out from Stefan Huskamp that a new *EasyVDR (Linux VDR Distribution (Video Disk Recorder http://www.cadsoft.de/vdr/))* release is coming soon and it too will feature support for the Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix through its use of the Xine library."
Furthermore i hope that thisis not blocking the efforts of AMD/ATI and Intel (or better is pushing this two) and that in the end something along VA-API is being used.

For sure - better if it would have been more precise ;)
