Weird, searching for "noad plugin vdr" gives no hits, and searching on google.com (not the german google page) for "noad", doesn't turn up any hits either.

Noad isn't a plugin, its an external program, so you just found nothing on that search :)
You can call noad with vdr parameter -r after a recording has finished, or run noad online, but see README for further informations on that.

Bummer! I was hoping it could be used to detect ads during live TV and reduce the volume. Ads always have louder sound, which is extremely annoying.

You must have an old tv that can't normalize volume.

Noad needs some time to find the most probable start/end point of commercials, so its generally not able to do it live. But it works in timeshift mode with a few minutes delay - which is better anyway, as you can skip the commercials instead of just watching them with reduced volume. ;)
