commenting out the offending line fixes it, but I'm a little confused as to why there is an error??

Hhm, seems like xine.h is outdated. XINE_EVENT_VDR_AUDIO was introduced recently (0.7.3).
I assume that xine-lib/include/xine.h contains the define, but for any reason, there seems to be a further xine.h available on your system which doesn't contain the define but is used while compiling.
