The server of vdr-portal has been upgraded - irc is not yet fixed and will be fixed when the person in charge finds time for it :)
So no you are doing nothing wrong. I think at the moment most people are using irc.freenode.net #vdr-portal

Does he need help? I know people who have setup & admin irc servers so if he has questions, he should ask them here. It should only take very little time to set one up.
